Siderite - Chalcopyrite

Mineral # 196 Available

Siderite, in a light-brown platy habit to about 5mm, small cabinet specimen from the Carn Brae Mine, Illogan, Cornwall, England. The specimen was sold to me by Richard Barstow Oct. 1976, with chalcopyrite as the "main" mineral -- it has sharp chalcopyrite crystals to about 8 mm, together with black hematite in platy habit, intergrown in places with the siderite. A number of etched quartz xtals are also present. All on quartz contacting the country rock.

A notation on the back of Richard Barstow's label for this specimen, written in Richard Barstow's own hand, reads "John Keates coll. (poet)", to which I subsequently added the dates "1795-1821". I have no further documentation on the provenance of this specimen, but further insights might be obtainable from investigating the specimen number inscribed in India ink on white paint (not enamel) on the back of the specimen. In light of Richard Barstow's meticulous attention to accuracy and his strong interest in the history of the specimens that passed through his hands, I believe this specimen indeed was likely at one time part of a collection acquired or accumulated by the poet John Keats, in keeping with the wide-ranging interests held by him and others in his circle with regard to natural science.

However, Michael P. Cooper, Nottingham Museums Registrar wrote me, saying that he believes that this is not from the collection of Keats the poet, but a Mr Keates (note the extra "e") whose collection was acquired from the Pig Yard Club in Yorkshire (Settle he recalls) many years ago by Ralph Sutcliffe and/or Lindsay Greenbank. It contained many a fine specimen, but its history – other than that it was a 19th C collection – is unknown.

This specimen measures about 8 cm x 4 cm x 3 cm.

Siderite #196 – Price: $US 325.
